from Pit to the Palace!
Episode 6
Patience lips quivered as she could manage to find the right words,
Clement: “I ask for the last time, what the hell are you doing in my abode?”
Patience stuttering,
Patience: “I came to see you!” she stood akimbo with her small protruding stomach.
Clement gnashed his teeth as the cheek became bigger, he looked fierce.
Clement: “before I close and open my bulgy eyes I want you to disappear!”
He made an attempt shut the door on her face but she held it with a plea,
Patience: “am begging you with God just give me the chance to explain, please”
He sighed as tears flooded his pupils,
Clement: “You broke my heart and sent me crashing to the ground!”
Patience: “I’m sorry,Clay!” she said In Gbagyi.
He opened the door for her to enter.
Clement: “what should I offer you?”
Patience sat on a stool, somewhat, nervy.
Patience: “Just water, please!”
He went out and returned with water minutes later, “Thank you,” she gulped the water nosily after which she belched.
Clement: “so what is it you wanna tell me?”
Patience had tears in her eyes,
Patience: “I didn’t cheat on you, Clay!”
Clement gaped at her and burst into laughter; Patience was shocked at his outburst. He laughed for seconds before catching his breath,
Clement: “So you’re Mary right? You didn’t cheat on me and I didn’t impregnate you,” he started laughing again.
Patience looked a bit irked. She sighed.
Patience: “Okay as I was saying. I’m pregnant yes but it wasn’t what I wanted. It was you I wanted and still want!”
Clement’s countenance changed as he flared up,
Clement: “I didn’t agree to listen to you so you’d make me feel stupid or play on my intelligence. Do you understand?” he rushed to the door and flung it open, “ I want to believe you’ve overstayed your welcome. You can now leave!”
She knelt down crying,
Patience: “Please, listen to me. I didn’t come to insult you but to explain things to you so you wouldn’t feel I betrayed yo…”
Clement: “… you didn’t betray me?”
Patience: “No, no. I’m sorry that isn’t what I mean! Yes I agree I betrayed you but lemme explain please!”
Clement: “I’m listening!”
Patience: “I didn’t sleep with Henry. He raped me!” she broke into tears
Clement: “What!?” He felt a fresh type of anger surge from within, “he raped you? How?”
She nodded and the cry didn’t let her talk. Clement felt stupid for being mad at her and instead of trying to hear her out in the first place.
….
Bala ran out of the compound walking in a brisk manner and talking to himself,
Bala: “What have I done? What did I do? Oh, Bally, you’re such a fool!”
He increased his pace; he just wanted to get exhausted, “What came over me?” rubbing his hands against the other, “Hope I didn’t touch her! Noo, we didn’t do anything I’m sure!” he started running he almost pushed off an old man from a bicycle,
“Teacher, hope all is well?” the old man asked.
Bala didn’t even look not to talk of apologizing. He continued running. There was no one in the compound his father was yet to be home and Kauna had gone to the stream. Like one haunted he ran into the room and bolted the door firmly. It was as if he had caught fever; he was shivering.
“Oh my God!” he ranted as different thoughts ran through his mind.
…
Hauwa was at Kyuata’s palace. They have being friends since childhood. It was funny how they became friends. They were seven year olds at that time. Kyauta and Diana had gone to the stream to fetch water and they met Hauwa who came to wash plates. Kyauta and Diana never liked Hauwa. As Hauwa was washing plates she mistakenly splashed water on Diana and Kyauta who had been looking for a way of fighting with her jumped at her,
Kyauta: “were you blind? Why would you pour water on her?” before Hauwa could apologize, she was bathed with insults, “ Idiot!”
Hauwa who was very stubborn didn’t lay back she fired back,
Hauwa: “Are you mad?”
They started fighting. They rushed at her but Diana being the laziest was easily shoved to the ground and she hit her knee on the ground. She held her bleeding knee crying. Kyauta and Hauwa continued with the fight. At the end of the fight each went home with a prize; Kyauta lost a tooth and Hauwa had a black eye.
When Hauwa got home; her mother who was hot tempered took her to Kyuata’s house after been told what happened. By the time she got there, Kyuata’s parents also complained of their daughter’s teeth. Kyuata’s father said, “They are just kids we shouldn’t bite ourselves for a little fight!” Their mothers commanded they hug each other and as they met at the stream days after they got talking. That was the beginning of what became a great friendship.
They were eating the food Kyauta had served,
Hauwa: “bestie, this your pottage is yummy!”
Kyauta: “See you as if you cannot cook better!”
Hauwa: “Don’t mock me ooo!”
They both laugh,
Kyauta: “Remember the fight we both had when we were kids?” They cackled, “Remember it took time before my teeth could grow back.”
Hauwa: “But why did you and Diana hate me that much. Innocent of me!” they laughed.
Kyauta still laughing,
Kyauta: “Innocent ko? Mu ko wo! I have heard you. But you’re damn stubborn sha. Always fighting and beating me. You were too strong. Fighting you wasn’t really easy. You were strong!” They laughed that time louder, “no one would believe you would grow and be this calm. Hauwa the iron girl!” Hauwa was laughing, “But come oo! What give you the mind to fight Bala back then!”
Hauwa: “I had to fight back. He was oppressing me now. I didn’t even care of he was older or not!”
The countenance of Kyauta changed; Hauwa knew it was because of Bala. Silence fell upon them, Hauwa sighed and it was the sigh that ruptured the silence, “I want to tell you something!” she cleared her throat, “Kyauta, I don’t think Bala tried raping Diana.”
Kyauta: “What do you mean?”
Among the trio friends Hauwa seemed to be the calmest and most logical: Diana was always used to lying and Kyauta who was too emotionally always fell prey to her lies.
Hauwa: “You know Diana now! You know how she is? She can cook up different kind of things just to have her way!”
Kyauta: “You mean it’s possible she could be lying?”
Hauwa nodded.
….
Kyauta after Hauwa had convinced her that Diana was lying, felt guilty. She didn’t even give Bala a chance to explain,
Kyauta: “why would Diana do this to me?” she said on her way back from seeing Hauwa off, “I must go and see Bala!” she turned to the route that led to Bala’s place.
Kauna: “Welcome!” Kauna greeted in Gbagyi,
Kyauta: “thank you my dear! Is your brother in?” Kauna nodded, “what of father?”
Kauna: “He went to see his friend!”
Kyauta nodded and walked to Bala’s door. The knock made him jerk out of the bed,
Bala: “yes, who is that?” he said in a gloomy voice no response but there was a bang again, sighed and opened the door. It was Kyauta . He was dumbfounded. It was like a dream.
Kyauta: “Can I come in?”
Quickly, he welcomed her in and she apologized for doubting him.
Bala: “I am to apologize.”
Kyauta held his hands,
Kyauta: “there is no need for that!” he wasn’t comfortable; the pacing of his heart increased, “I missed you!”
He forced a smile,
Bala: “me too!”
She tried to make him talk but he was acting all messed up.
Question: Should he tell her what transpired between him and Diana? Wouldn’t that affect the relationship again?
To be continued… ……..
